1) Trying to keep civil government out of church government.

2) Ministers Richard Hooker (1554-1600),   etc. preached this, been around for 400 years.

3) 1st Amendment prohibits government establishing a Christian denomination, and keeps the civil government out of public religious exercise.

4) Jefferson wrote on Friday, Jan 1, 1802 to Baptists explaining that the government is not going to mess with them because of the wall of separation.  Then he went to church in the Capital building on Sunday, Jan. 3. 

5) 1854 Congress refused to separate Christian principles from the public square

Church and State Institutions are Separate

1) King Uzziah is an example of separation of Church and State, the King is not the Priest.

4) Everson v. Board of Education (1947), only cited Jefferson’s phrase.

5) For 170 years, before 1962 Engel v. Vitale case, the court defined “church” as being a federally established denomination.  Now it is a religious activity.

6) Jefferson had no influence with the Constitution; he was in France at the time.  Not one of the 90 Framers mentioned “separation of church and state.”

7) In 1800 the Capital became a church building that Jefferson attended, so did John Quincy Adams.

8) 1971 “lemon test” said unless religion has secular primary purpose it can’t be done, endorsement test (gov. can’t be friendly toward church), and outsider test.  Ex. If an atheist doesn’t like us, we all have to stop.

9) Senate Chaplains were hired to preach sermons at the Capital by congress.

10) Fisher Ames, who wrote the 1st amendment, said the Bible should be the number one textbook.

11) Benjamin Rush gives reasons why we will never take the Bible out of schools.
