Lee Strobel begins the chapter with
a story of a man by the name of Ronald Williamson, who was accused of murdering
a twenty-one-year-old girl. The
jury is told that some hairs were found on the victim that was similar to the
defendant’s. Because of this, he
is found guilty and is sentenced to death. Years later, a DNA sample was taken and it gave evidence
that he was innocent. Strobel says
this story parallels his investigation into finding out evidence for a
Creator.
He talks about a time back in school when his teachers taught him about evolution and it convinced him the need for no God. He thought that Darwin had figured out how life came about. But for Darwin’s theory to be right he said it would have to be proven by the evidence in fossils found in the future. Actually there is no evidence that stands under scrutiny.
There is evolution that does happen. It’s called microevolution. Microevolution is variation within a species, such as over 200 different kinds of dogs. But that is losing genetic information, not gaining information if you need macroevolution to exist. Macroevolution, what Darwin theorized, is amoeba-to-man evolution. There is no solid evidence that supports macroevolution. We should see millions of transitional life forms in the fossil record like half pig and half dogs, or half horse and half bear. Everything in the fossil record is a whole animal.
Strobel goes to do an interview with Walter L. Brady at his house. Brady says the scenario of “prebiotic soup” came from a Russian scientist in 1924. Also when Stanley Miller formed amino acids by sending electric shocks through certain chemicals, the thought that was the proof, until it was made known that the earth would have not had the same conditions as Miller had in his experiment. Brady then goes on to speak about the incredible complexity of RNA, DNA, and cells.
There are six theories that scientists have come up with the past century to try to give an explanation of the existence of life. The theories are as follows:
#1 Random Chance- Scientists said that given the right circumstances and billions of years, pond scum could become a man. That theory was thrown out because of the incredible complexity of life.
#2 Chemical Affinity- This said that there must be some inherent attraction that would cause amino acids to form proteins. All 250 amino acids were tested and the results said the sequencing had nothing to do with the chemical processes.
#3 Self-Ordering Tendencies- This talked about cooling water becomes ice and water coming together in a drain causes some sort of low order of complexity, so that could be a step toward finding out how the universe came together, but that was thrown out too because, again, of the incredible complexity of the universe does not even compare.
#4 Seeding from Space- Crick said maybe life on earth was initiated by life that came from outer space. But then the question is where did that life come from?
#5 Vents in the Ocean- Bradley said maybe these ocean hot springs could cause some chemical reactions but it doesn’t answer the assembly problem.
#6 Life from Clay- Molecules can react better out of water, but how would the clay be able to impart the information needed to sequence the chemicals together in the right way? It’s far too short of the specified complexity that living matter needs.
Bradley says that the evidence for a Creator is, not just convincing, but compelling. Many don’t believe the evidence for God because they go in looking at evidence, persuaded ahead of time, that there is no God. Science doesn’t murder God, it actually establishes that our Creator is alive and well.
